Quires and page numbers
Formula: A2. No page numbers; folio numbers provided by the librarian of the Bodleian Library. The quire has the signature ‘Understanding A’ in the left margin at the bottom of its first page, fol. 115r, and ‘Understanding A’ written vertically at the upper right-hand side of the last page, fol. 116v.
The quire contains several projected additions for the Essay, the first entries have their title in the left-hand margin: ‘Anima’=‘Anima B’ (fol. 115r); ‘Enthusiasm’ (fol. 115r); ‘Method’ (fols 115r-115v); ‘Libertie’ (fol. 115v); ‘Connection of Ideas’ (115v). The last entry is ‘Perhaps it will be said’, draft for Essay, II.xxi, but eventually not included. The entry ‘Enthusiasm’ remained empty, although some barely readable words in pencil were added at a later stage in a hand other than Locke’s, possibly Peter King’s.
Each page has a margin on the left-hand side, used for additions and corrections and for the title of the various entries (see ; see also ). Fragment ‘Perhaps it will be said’ is marked by a header at the top of the left-hand side of fol. 116r: ‘Book II. Chap. xxi’, and the draft starts with the last words of the section after which is was intended to follow: ‘God if he will § 54’.
 None, except on fol 116r.
The entire manuscript seems to be in the hand of Locke himself, with the exception of three entries in pencil: an insertion on fol. 115r on the place, otherwise left blank, under the header ‘Enthusiasm’; and two marginal insertions, one on fol. 115r in ‘Method’, and the other on fol. 115v in ‘Libertie’.
